We feel honored at WME Books to work with authors who have important things to teach us. Now Claudia Thomas has been honored, in turn, by her entire profession at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, with their 2008 Diversity Award.

Her passion for opening up her profession to women and African Americans becomes tangible in those whose lives and careers she has touched. Keisha DePass, MD, of the Maryland Pediatric Orthopaedic Center, is quoted in Today's Drum, "Dr. Thomas has been instrumental in helping me to achieve my goals. She is my role model and one of the main reasons I felt that I could successfully accomplish my dreams of becoming an orthopaedic surgeon."
Never one to rest on her laurels, Dr. Thomas also spoke on a panel at the AAOS annual meetings entitled, "She Can Do It!—Increasing the Number of Women in Orthopaedic Surgery," along with 2007 Miss Black USA Ms. Kalilah Allen-Harris, who is also a medical student pursuing a career in orthopaedic surgery.
